Knives Out 3 recently received an update from its writer/director Rian Johnson.

"It’s coming along," Johnson said during an interview with The Wrap to promote Fair Play, on which he serves as a producer. "I obviously couldn’t work during the strike, and now that it’s over, I’m diving in full force, and so it’s coming along. I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head. It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing."

The Knives Out franchise, starring Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, follows the famed private detective as he solves star-studded murder mysteries. In 2019's Knives Out, Blanc investigates the death of bestselling author Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) with suspects ranging from Harlan's daughter Linda (Jamie Lee Curtis) and son Walt (Michael Shannon) to grandson Hugh (Chris Evans) and nurse Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas).

The 2022 sequel, Glass Onion, finds Blanc rather unexpectedly in the middle of a murder mystery on a private Greek island during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Joining Craig in the Netflix sequel are Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.

Knives Out 3 Won't Get Complacent

While Knives Out 3 remains shrouded in mystery, both literally and figuratively, Johnson has assured fans that he will make sure that the Knives Out films refrain from getting complacent. "Daniel and I have talked a lot about that, how the instant we feel like we’re turning the crank on another one of these, we have to stop," he said. "So, it’s very important with each one now, and the third one especially, that it feels kind of scary and dangerous. You have to shake the box." Knives Out 3 will be the second and final film in Netflix's Knives Out deal with Johnson, which saw the streamer shell out $469 million in 2021 for the rights to two Knives Out sequels.

No Actors in Mind Yet for Knives Out 3

With the first two Knives Out movie ensembles being filled with well-known actors, fans are naturally curious to learn who might appear in the upcoming third feature. However, Johnson revealed in January 2023 that he won't be thinking of specific actors to cast until the script is finished. "I try my best not to like, think of actors too specifically when I'm writing because I don't want to get my heart broken when they're not available," he explained. "Right now, I'm just starting to fish for what would be fun to do next, so we'll see."

Knives Out 3 does not have a release date but will stream exclusively on Netflix.
