New York Comic Con saw the release of a new trailer for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, showcasing its cast and setting in a whole new anime-style light.

The Netflix adaptation of the popular comic series isn't just going to reference the stories they were inspired by. Instead, creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, alongside BenDavid Grabinski, Edgar Wright and more, are putting together everything they can from the various adaptations and spinoffs of those original graphic novels to tell something fresh while maintaining everything that made Scott Pilgrim's adventures so unique the first time around. The new trailer at NYCC showed off just that, with hyper-stylized visuals and many familiar voices.

The Plot and Cast of the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Anime

Specifically, the voices of Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth-Winstead, Kieran Culkin and more from the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World movie adaptation were featured in the trailer. They, alongside many other actors from the cult classic movie, are returning to give their beloved characters another run. Fans can also very easily see the anime and video game references that fill the trailer, including an obvious reference to Mortal Kombat via the background music and the "info dump"-style rundown of the main cast, all while reminding fans of the series' plot and setup.

Just like the original stories, Scott Pilgrim keeps having dreams about a certain girl, who he finds out is named Ramona Flowers. After finally meeting her and asking her out, he finds out the hard way that she has "seven evil exes" that he must deal with so he can well and truly date her. The problem is that these exes are powerful and not afraid to try and beat up Scott to stake their claim on Ramona. One of the anime series' highlights will be the "unbelievably big" action sequences that could not be portrayed in quite the same way in any other format.

However, as noted, the series won't simply be a visually updated version of the graphic novels. The Scott Pilgrim Takes Off team has stated previously that they wouldn't be doing a point-for-point adaptation like other attempts, as this would be a "waste of time." Instead, they'll update some things, flesh other elements out and use the anime setting to its fullest potential. They've also had to change some bits of the lore along the way, like how Ramona now works for Netflix instead of Amazon. Fans will have to wait and see what other changes may await.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off arrives on Netflix on Nov. 17.
