<![CDATA[How The MCU Undid Thanos' Greatest Character Arc]]> Thanos has a reputation as Marvel's ultimate villain. The Mad Titan has earned that appellation from his many schemes to get ultimate power and use them to destroy as many lives as possible. Thanos's obsession with Mistress Death, the personification of death, appeared to be the motivation behind his actions, but that's a very simplistic way of looking at the character. Thanos is actually complex, something imbued in the villain by his creator, writer/artist Jim Starlin.

<![CDATA[10 Overused DC Origin Tropes]]> DC Comics pioneered the superhero, creating the first, and many would argue greatest, heroes of all time. These Golden Age originals were bold new creations. Early DC creators took inspiration from the world of pulp detective stories, sci-fi, fantasy, and more to bring them to life. Many of the origin tropes most associated with superheroes came from DC at this time, and creators working for the publisher have re-used them time and time again.

<![CDATA[Why "Xemnu Returns," is one of Immortal Hulk's Most Underrated Horror Comics]]> The Immortal Hulk (written by Al Ewing, illustrated by Joe Bennett) made waves not just for revitalizing The Hulk and Bruce Banner, but for turning Hulk's comics into a terrifying horror saga. The run received praise for revealing how monstrous and even demonic the Hulks and their enemies could be. The Immortal Hulk also succeeded in turning Hulk's lore and Gamma powers into cosmic horror. That said, what fans really loved about The Immortal Hulk was its body horror.

<![CDATA["Hydra Cap" Wasn't Secret Empire's Weakest Link]]> Secret Empire has a terrible legacy. The event's build-up kicked off in earnest with Steve Rogers: Captain America, a book that launched back in May 2016. This comic dropped a bombshell on readers: Captain America was an agent of Hydra, eschewing freedom and democracy for fascism. The book revealed how all this occurred, including how Rogers took control of SHIELD and enacted a plan that allowed him to take over the United States.

<![CDATA[Vote Loki: How The Political Satire Became The God of Mischief's Best Comic]]> Since his first comic appearance in 1962, the ever-mercurial Loki has been many things. The character drifts between supervillain, antihero, and even out-and-out superhero. Readers have witnessed Loki as an ominous, Machiavellian adult in Dark Avengers and a playful, virtuous child in Young Avengers. Given his bisexuality and gender fluidity, neither his romantic partners nor sex can be predicted from panel to panel. This has always been the character’s principal appeal — a capricious refusal to be definitively labeled that keeps fans forever on their toes. Loki’s variability means even long-term readers of Marvel never know quite what to expect from the God of Mischief.

Marvel and DC have told countless stories that have had characters, heroes, and villains alike, taken out of play. <![CDATA[Stan Lee’s Strangest Legacy is a NHL Project]]> The start of the 2000s was an interesting time for Stan Lee. The godfather of Marvel had cemented his reputation as an immortal of the comic book medium with a legacy that, at the time, overshadowed that of the struggling company. As Marvel was nearly escaping bankruptcy at the end of the 90s, the creator of its greatest characters decided the time had come to branch out. Whether he was searching for greener pastures or just stretching his creative muscles, Lee took on several non-Marvel projects in the 2000s that ranged from campy to downright regrettable. But from this eclectic collection of strange tales, nothing was more bizarre than the Guardian Project, a superhero-focused collaboration with the National Hockey League.

<![CDATA[Uncanny Avengers Forces Captain America to Confront his Darkest Skeleton]]> Uncanny Avengers' return in Fall of X was pretty surprising. While bringing back the Avengers Unity Squad in the Krakoa Era makes sense, relaunching Uncanny Avengers this late in the proceedings feels a bit like a missed opportunity. However, the book has been doing pretty well, as writer Gerry Duggan and artist Javier Garron deliver an action-packed ride. The premise is pretty interesting. Orchis has recruited a secret villain to steal the Captain Krakoa costume and impersonate the mutant nation's great hero. As "Captain Krakoa," this imposter has brought together a group of mutants to act as terrorists, further turning the public against mutants.

The Avengers burst onto the scene in 1963, combining Marvel's greatest heroes and pitting them against threats that no one hero could face on their own. Avengers was long the place for Marvel fans to read about their favorite heroes in one place, taking on big stakes threats that made comics exciting. The Avengers' popularity fell down a well once the X-Men became ascendant in the 1980s, only coming back in the '00s because Marvel toned down on the X-Men hype.

The first few months of 1995 were owned by The Age of Apocalypse, a wildly successful gamble that paid off. The X-Men dominated the top of the sales charts, but things were about to get very bad for Marvel. Pretty soon, the X-Men were the only comics keeping the lights on.

<![CDATA[Why Magneto Should Always Be A Holocaust Survivor X-Men]]> Throughout the decades, Magneto has been a man of many faces. Marvel’s Master of Magnetism has evolved from Charles Xavier's and the X-Men's greatest rival to a socially prominent anti-hero before he helped found Krakoa, a sovereign nation of mutants. As the identities, alliances, and even names of the man originally known as Max Eisenhardt changed over time, the context and intent of his historical actions in the face of his modern altruistic framing came into question. The character’s new self-titled limited series, Magneto, by J.M. DeMatteis, Todd Nuack, Rachelle Rosenberg and Travis Lanham seems excited to tackle those questions, celebrating Magneto’s 60th anniversary by re-framing his entire character.

<![CDATA[The Silver Surfer Is A Wimp, And That’s Okay]]> Since 1966, Norrin Radd has cruised the celestial seas as the shimmering Silver Surfer. Marvel's spacefaring sentry has spent a half-century traveling the spaceways at lightspeed, moving from planet to planet to experience lifetimes' worth of conflict and culture. His wisdom and the Power Cosmic, a fraction of the power available to the world-devouring Galactus, have made the Surfer one of the most distinguished allies of the Fantastic Four, Defenders, and Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel’s Sentinel of the Spaceways stands among the stars as one of the bastions of his company’s unique brand of Kirby-esque cosmic heroism and he's frequently seen as one of Marvel's most powerful champions — at least on paper. In practice, the Silver Surfer is kind of a wimp.

The first Secret Wars dropped in 1985, a twelve issue series that was made to be an advertisement for an action figure line. However, fans really enjoyed the story, and between the success of Secret Wars and DC's Crisis On Infinite Earths, the event comic was born. Since then, Secret Wars has had several sequels, but the best is easily 2015's Secret Wars, by Jonathan Hickman, Esad Ribic, Ive Svorcina, and Chris Eliopolous.

<![CDATA[How Firestar, Spider-Man's Amazing Friend, Nearly Became a Major X-Men Villain]]> It isn't uncommon for superheroes to have unusual origin stories. Bitten by a radioactive spider! A wayward alien baby that crash lands on Earth! Doused in gamma radiation! The wilder the origins, the more interesting the character and the richer their lore. For some heroes, though, their origins don't take place in the pages of a comic, but in animated TV shows due to copyright issues. For Angelica Jones—aka, Firestar—that was exactly what happened and despite her odd debut into the Marvel Universe, she very nearly became a major X-Men antagonist.

<![CDATA[What Lessons Can Spider-Boy Teach Marvel's New Punisher?]]> The introduction of Spider-Boy, Spider-Man's young sidekick, has caused some controversy among fans. For starters, Spider-Man's use of a child in his often deadly battle against crime seems like a terrible idea, and incredibly selfish on Peter Parker's part, even though Spider-Man #11 (by Dan Slott, Luciano Vecchio, Edgar Delgado, VC's Joe Caramagna) did some legwork to explain both their reasoning. Even though it seems Spider-Boy is here to stay, it is hard not to be concerned that Marvel is essentially saying it is okay to have a child soldier as long as certain conditions are met. However, his debut might help an upcoming character avoid the problematic legacy of predecessors.
