The Marvels has broken a Marvel Cinematic Universe record with its run time.

The Brie Larson-led superhero movie, the latest addition to the MCU, is set to be its shortest film, with a runtime of just 105 minutes (1 hour and 45 minutes). AMC Theaters confirmed the runtime after conflicting reports. This breaks the previous record held by The Incredible Hulk and Thor: The Dark World, which both ran for 112 minutes, making The Marvels a seven-minute shorter cinematic experience.

In 2012, The Avengers had a runtime of 145 minutes (2 hours and 25 minutes) which is similar to the sequel. Captain America: Civil War went past the 2-hour mark at 147 minutes (2 hours 27 minutes) and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which featured three versions of Spider-Man, ran for 148 minutes (2 hours 28 minutes). Avengers: Endgame, being the epic conclusion it was, currently holds the title for the longest MCU movie at 181 minutes (3 hours and 1 minute).

The Marvels Is the Last MCU Film of 2023

The Marvels, which is the last MCU movie of 2023, unites three MCU stars: Brie Larson's formidable titular superhero, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani in the role of Ms. Marvel. Complementing this stellar cast are Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-Joon, alongside the ever-reliable Marvel stalwart Samuel L. Jackson, reprising his iconic portrayal of Nick Fury. The Marvels comes after previously exploring Captain Marvel's origin in her standalone film and recently delving into Ms. Marvel's character through her own six-part TV series on Disney+. This leaves Monica Rambeau as the sole hero yet to be fully explored.

The official synopsis for The Marvels is as follows: “Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

Captain Marvel made over 1.1 billion at the box office and Disney will be looking to replicate the success with The Marvels which had a hefty $270 million budget. The film is directed by Nia DaCosta, who is the youngest filmmaker to direct a Marvel movie. The shorter runtime may be explained by two of the three lead characters being established from the first movie and the connected Disney miniseries.

The Marvels debuts in theaters on November 10, 2023.
