Who Are the MCU's Science Bros?

Bruce Banner and Tony Stark discussing the Tesseract in The Avengers

MCU fans dubbed Tony Stark and Bruce Banner the Science Bros. It's a concept seen in comics as well, with Iron Man and Hulk usually creating greatness when they work together. Of course, the books have Reed Richards, Black Panther and Hank Pym, so the intellect is spread around. The movies, though, lean heavily on Tony and Bruce as the great minds.

It's been seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where they worked together to make an artificial intelligence, even incorporating some of their brainwaves. Sadly, Ultron went rogue before being stopped, but Iron Man and Hulk would make amends and work on the Endgame time-travel heist. That was done to get the Infinity Stones together and stop Thanos. Admittedly, as likable as they are, they did need to atone.

They made Ultron without consulting the others, helping kick dominoes over that'd lead to the Snap. It's a bit of ego and god complex, with curious minds wandering too far. They believe in actions first, asking permission later -- which, while their allies forgive them, is a bad precedent to adopt. Now, Hulk seems to be carrying on the symbol in the wake of Tony's death, although he's still pushing boundaries without oversight in She-Hulk: Attorney-at-Law.

Loki's Science Bros Are More Human

Casey adores OB in Loki Season 2

Loki carves a path for its dynamic duo when Casey and Ke Huy Quan's OB meet up at the control room in the TVA. OB's the genius engineer and technician extraordinaire who built the handbook, and most of the machines around. But even he can't figure out how to stop the overload. As OB relays the bad news, Casey pops in and realizes he's speaking to a centuries-old legend.

Casey's in fanboy mode, grateful he could meet his idol. He asks for an autograph of the handbook, to which OB playfully obliges. It's a warm, funny and sentimental moment with all the temporal doom and gloom looming. Once more, this is the show's style of mixing in dark comedy, as the guys connect with each other. This sort of levity is most welcomed as it does feel like the apocalypse is right around the corner.

That said, such endearment brings out the nerd in Casey and geek in OB, as viewers can tell they want to chop it up and talk shop. The thing is, Casey admits he knows the book inside out, so if OB is looking for a protégé, there's an apprentice right here. Two minds are greater than one, so they could work together and help save the TVA. By extension, they'd be saving existence. But this time, these Science Bros are more human and won't take risks that aren't sanctioned. Right now, playing it safe works but even if they have to gamble, one has to feel these are the right folks to bet on.

Loki's Science Bros Are More Humble

Casey asks for an autograph from OB in Loki Season 2

What helps is the humility shown between Casey and OB. Casey has broken down personal walls, sharing all the insight he could into Renslayer, Miss Minutes betraying everyone, and how TemPads are being used in duplicitous manners. He's recognized that he has to strip away all his fears and narcissism to solve the puzzle. After all, Renslayer played everyone.

OB exudes the same energy. He recognizes he's got flaws and is willing to learn. Both have so much knowledge, so being ready to recalibrate and course-correct -- individually or together -- is indeed the mark of true heroes. And make no mistake, this sort of collaboration is needed now more than ever. The fact they don't care about pride or glam is a big plus with the problem to come. No one knows the machinery, literally, like they do, which makes them valuable assets.

Loki's Science Bros Fits the Show's Tone

Loki-Mobius-Season-2

OB and Casey being an odd, unlikely couple further nod to the show's dynamic with Loki and Mobius. No one expected the latter two to team up, but they're trying to get things done. This synergy is what OB and Casey embody -- underdogs who can bring out the best in one another.

This camaraderie even nods to shows like The Big Bang Theory and Quan's time as The Goonies' Data or Indiana Jones' Short Round, where meek, shy folks end up being the trump cards. Such Hail Mary plays are more relatable for the average audiences as well, versus overpowered heroes coming in to save the day, physically or with their minds. The latter trope's been done to death with Tony, Hulk and even Thor.

So, it's about time the "small man" gets the limelight. Together, Casey and OB have potential to be this timid ray of hope, reminding viewers how hardworking cogs in big corporations are the heart, soul and engine of it all. Ultimately, fans are all in and eager to see the new Science Bros. The mission's filled with more grandeur and consequences. But with their history, dearth of information, and ability to process data quickly, it does feel like OB and Casey are the safe hands for the job.
