Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange are the most popular anime to debut in Japan this autumn season.

Per Anime News Network, a report from Japanese marketing research company Video Research revealed Frieren and Firefighter Daigo were the most-watched series to debut during the week of Sept. 25 to Oct. 1. The data was gathered from Japan's Kanto region, which formed an estimated viewer count based on a survey of households in the area. Firefighter Daigo drew in approximately 3.8 percent of all Japanese households, narrowly beating out the long-running One Piece and Doraemon series for fifth place on the charts. The two-hour-long Frieren special was notably met with even more success, with an estimated 6.8 percent of all Japanese households tuning in to put it at a close third--right behind Detective Conan and Sazae-san, which stood at 6.9 percent and 7.9 percent, respectively.

Frieren and Firefighter Daigo's premieres are startlingly impressive, though it remains to be seen how both will compare to some of the shows that had yet to debut at the time. This includes anime adaptations for several popular series, such as The Apothecary Diaries, Shy and A Girl & Her Guard Dog. The autumn lineup additionally features the return of massively popular anime from previous seasons, which includes Dr. Stone, The Rising of the Shield Hero and Goblin Slayer.

Frieren and Firefighter Daigo Top the Charts

Based on the eponymous manga series written by author Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by artist Tsukasa, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is a fantasy series set in the era following the fall of the Demon King. The story follows the titular elf mage Frieren, one of the four heroes who defeated the Demon King. Decades after the Demon King's fall and her companions' passing, she embarks on another journey to retrace her party's adventure throughout the continent alongside her apprentice Fern and the young warrior Stark.

Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange is a sequel to mangaka Masahito Soda's 1995 manga Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M. The series centers on the aspiring firefighters Daigo Toake, Shun Onoda and Yuki Nakamura, who all hope to one day join the ranks of the special rescue corps known as Orange.
