Fox has released the official synopsis for the upcoming "Treehouse of Horror XXXIV," the latest installment of The Simpsons' fan-favorite horror-comedy anthology.

According to ComicBook.com,The Simpsons' next "Treehouse" episode will not air until after Halloween, but that has not dampened fans' excitement for the upcoming installment. The official synopsis for "Treehouse of Horror XXXIV" reads, "Bart is turned into an NFT, and Marge must fight through the Blockchain to rescue him; Lisa turns to a murderer from her past; an outbreak transforms Springfielders into a plague of lazy, beer-loving oafs." Lisa turning to a murderer from her past is most likely a Silence of the Lambs riff. She will probably go to Sideshow Bob, with Kelsey Grammer almost certain to reprise his role as the character he has played for many years.

The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horror" specials are among the series' more popular episodes. The early episodes have special DVD releases, and The Simpsons comics from Bongo have adapted the "Treehouse of Horror" event. "Treehouse of Horror" enabled The Simpsons' producers to explore non-canonical themes within the show's universe. They were effectively able to do different things, switch animation styles, and explore alternate versions and timelines of the familiar characters from Springfield. The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horror" featured a parody of Stephen King's It in the last installment. It also had a Bob's Burgers crossover and a Death Note gag.

The "Treehouse of Horror III" episode, which included parodies of The Twilight Zone and King Kong, as well as a more general riff on a zombie outbreak, has become one of the series' most beloved installments. The episode, however, was hard to make. Showrunner Al Jean revealed "Treehouse of Horror III" had to undergo many revisions before it could air.

Jean intimated that six weeks before the episode's projected premiere, the first fully-colored version of the episode returned from animation in South Korea. The Treehouse of Horror episode was deemed unsuitable, with many of its jokes failing to land. In response, the writer's room spent the next six weeks tweaking dialogue and punching up jokes. The showrunner disclosed that the fan-favorite episode received nearly a hundred dialogue changes, which the cast had to re-record.

"Treehouse of Horror XXXIV" will air on Fox on November 5, 2023.
