Disney's Lorcana trading card game from publisher Ravensburger took players and game stores by storm with the September release of its first set, The First Chapter. Now, the next expansion in the world of Lorcana, Rise of the Floodborn, is set to bring another slate of Disney characters and songs into the fold, including several from a half dozen classic movies that were previously absent from the game entirely.

As in The First Chapter, many of the characters coming to card tables of Rise of the Floodborn are a part of the eponymous and mysterious Floodborn for themselves. Between these wildly alternating versions of these iconic Disney characters and their slightly more tame — albeit nonetheless surprising — Dreamborn counterparts, there are all manner of new cards for players to wield in the coming months. Beyond that, Rise of the Floodborn will also introduce new mechanics to the game, as well, several of which will undoubtedly have a profound impact on what decks players will see shortly.

1 Noteworthy Rise Of The Floodborn Cards

Zero to Hero

The Zero to Hero Card from Disney Lorcana

Much like Magic: The Gathering and most other trading card games of its ilk, Lorcana uses a color-based Ink resource system, with all cards corresponding to one of six colors available to players. And, much like Magic: The Gathering, each color on Lorcana's color wheel has its own unique identity of effects and abilities that are available to them. Though many of the basic concepts and mechanics are shared between all colors to one degree or another, Rise of the Floodborn is set to begin giving each color a more defined space within that color wheel. For Amber, this means cost reduction mechanics in the form of cards such as Zero to Hero and Mickey Mouse - Friendly Face, although the former is far more exciting as a two-drop that can be Sung for free by a similarly cheap character for a potentially game-winning swing to a larger character's Ink cost.

The Queen - Commanding Presence

The Queen - Commanding Presence card from Disney Lorcana

As with Zero to Hero and Mickey Mouse - Friendly Face, The Queen - Commanding Presence is set to help establish at least part of Amber's place on Lorcana's color wheel by introducing another villain to the list of cards it has available. Players had already seen the beginnings of a villain-based strategy in Amber with The First Chapter in the form of Hades - Lord of Olympus. Even with this Floodborn variant of Hades, however, players haven't had any support for a villains deck in Amber beyond whatever their chosen secondary color could provide.

Merlin - Shapeshifter

Amethyst - Merlin

Merlin - Shapeshifter might not seem like much in terms of raw stats for a card that costs four Ink to cast, but his Battle of Wits ability is indicative of there being more to this animated wizard than meets the eye. By gaining an extra Lore count for the rest of any given turn each time one of his controller's other characters is returned to their hand from play, this Merlin stands as another example of Ravensburger seeding the beginnings of completely new strategies into Lorcana. Whether there will be enough bounce-type effects to make Merlin - Shapeshifter competitively viable upon his release remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that players will try to make such a deck come together no matter what other cards Rise of the Floodborn includes.

Belle - Hidden Archer

Emerald - Belle

Belle - Hidden Archer might just be the most exciting card out of Rise of the Floodborn so far, if not in its entirety. There are still plenty of cards to be previewed, but this Floodborn variant of Belle could still easily stand above them all with her cheap Shift cost, more than fair stats, and a potentially game-breaking ability to top it all off. Like Flynn Rider from The First Chapter, Belle - Hidden Archer forces an opponent to discard whenever she is challenged. Unlike Flynn, however, Belle - Hidden Archer forces an opponent to discard their entire hand which, when she is very possibly gaining three Lore per turn as early as turn four, is all but guaranteed if they aren't holding removal for her already.

Bucky - Squirrel Squeak Tutor

Emerald - Bucky

Although Bucky - Squirrel Squeak Tutor is effectively just another decently priced Inkable addition to Emerald decks, his Squeak ability could easily open the door to some truly crushing attrition strategies by way of discard. With each Floodborn character Bucky's controller plays, each of their opponents is forced to discard a card. At only two Ink, having multiple Squirrel Squeak Tutors in play won't be difficult to pull off. And, depending on how many cheap Floodborn characters are introduced alongside Bucky in Rise of the Floodborn, triggering its Squeak ability multiple times in a single turn may not be much harder.

Dinner Bell

Ruby - Dinner Bell

Whereas Raya - Warrior and Kumandra and Mulan - Soldier in Training stand out as reasonable evergreen additions to Ruby decks, Dinner Bell gives scarlet strategies one of the best card draw engines Lorcana has seen. With numerous characters sporting high toughness such as Maui - Hero to All and Stitch - Abomination, Ruby has plenty of prime selections when it comes to what players can sacrifice in exchange for drawing as many as four or five cards at a time. Considering that card draw was largely relegated to Amber and Amethyst cards, seeing such a potent effect in Ruby is certain to pique players' interests if not push them to adopt entirely new strategies.

Cogsworth - Grandfather Clock

Sapphire - Cogsworth Grandfather Clock

Cogsworth was already a beloved character to fans of Beauty and the Beast long before they caught a glimpse of him in Rise of the Floodborn, let alone an elderly, Floodborn variant of him. Now that they have, fans can see that Cogsworth is much more than a simple clock, rather he stands as a powerhouse unto himself. Apart from having a high toughness, low Shift cost, and protection in the form of Ward, Cogsworth - Grandfather Clock also grants all of his controller's other characters Resist +1, which could quickly become game-breaking in multiples.

Cinderella - Stouthearted

Steel - Cinderella Stouthearted

Though the earliest Rise of the Floodborn previews positioned Tiana - Celebrating Princess as the face of the upcoming Resist mechanic, Cinderella - Stouthearted is far more exciting at face value. Cinderella's Shift cost might be a little high, but having Resist +2, five strength and willpower, and three Lore is all more than worth it. This is particularly true if players can make use of Cinderella's The Singing Sword ability, which allows her to challenge ready characters any turn in which they also play a Song, especially if paired with cards like Moana - Of Matanui or Lefou - Instigator, who can ready friendly characters for another shot at the competition.
