<![CDATA[Loki Has a Lot in Common With Scarlet Witch]]> In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there'll always be that discussion over who's the most powerful character. Some would say Thanos, although he may need the Infinity Gauntlet to back his claims up. Others would argue Thor, but he'd require Mjolnir or Stormbreaker, while Doctor Strange would need his trinkets and relics, too. Many think it's Carol Danvers, due to the Infinity Stone (Tesseract) power her Captain Marvel has within.

As Negative Man, he's had a lot of ups and downs, with his emotional turbulence being linked to how he had to hide his queer identity from his wife and the military years back. Sadly, Larry's still living in a modern era where acceptance isn't as forthcoming as he'd like.

Inspired by the many short stories and poems from Edgar Allan Poe, the series transposes the original macabre author's works into a modern setting. Flanagan delves deeper into existing themes and crafts a harrowing critique against capitalistic exploitation and the absence of consequences for the actions of the wealthy. This all culminates in an ending where the Ushers get their dues. The Fall of the House of Usher follows the Ushers as one of the world's wealthiest families, who amassed their fortune by deceiving and exploiting consumers.

<![CDATA[Which Star Trek Captains Capture the Spirit of Jim Kirk and William Shatner?]]> Looking back over the nearly 60 years of its history, the success of Star Trek seems an improbable one. A large part of what made Star Trek: The Original Series work so well was its cast, led by William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk. While each iteration of the universe Gene Roddenberry created is unique, comparisons are inevitable. Patrick Stewart -- the actor who breathed life into the universe's second USS Enterprise captain Jean-Luc Picard -- was deliberately designed to not evoke comparisons to Kirk. Even the handsome, action-focused character meant to emulate that energy, Will Riker, never smiled as much as the wry Kirk did in The Original Series.

Every fan who forswears the entire universe for one new film or another, just can't tear themselves away from the saga. For better or worse, each installment does try to service those fans by including connective tissue to the past while telling its own story. The Force ghost of Anakin Skywalker watching over Sabine and Ahsoka in the Season 1 finale of that series isn't just fan service. It's an important capstone on the story the show wanted to tell.

The high-concept time-travel and multiverse plot drives the characters to places and people that are important to them and not the next Avengers movie. The Time Variance Authority started as sadistic antagonists for Loki and Sylvie to take down. In Season 2, Loki is turning the TVA into genuine heroes while not losing any of that focus on its characters.

Fans of Mike Flanagan's previous horror work likely won't be surprised by this melding of stories or the show's modern setting either, as Flanagan tends to take popular horror stories and remix them for fresh takes on old favorites.

<![CDATA[American Horror Story: The True Story Behind Season 1's Nurse Killings]]> One of many TV franchises created by Ryan Murphy, American Horror Story is an anthology of spooky and terrifying affairs. <![CDATA[Is Zapp Brannigan Captain Kirk?]]> Futurama is chock-full of scene-stealing supporting figures, from Carol "Mom" Miller to Morbo the Annihilator. Zapp Brannigan, however, is in a class by himself as a buffoonish military captain convinced of his own infallibility and routinely failing upward though disaster after disaster. His preening arrogance is one of the show's most reliable source of gags, and because he's a supporting figure (if a major one), the writers only bring him onboard when they have something terrific for him to do. Of course, this also raises the question of who or what inspired Zapp Brannigan's character.
